TerranStarHammer

The StarHammer variant of the Naval Man-o-War is the only vessel in the Royal Navy that can carry the massive Nova Mortar. The Entire bow of the standard Man-o-War has been reinforced and stretched to make room for this bombardment weapon and support the heavy recoil of its firing.

Overview[]

The StarHammer is an expensive artillery ship with a massively powerful Nova Mortar at its disposal, as well as great broadside firepower. However, it is extremely slow and hard to turn. Except for the addition of a Nova Mortar, the StarHammer is very similar to the standard Man-o-War, except it is has fewer broadside guns and a weaker stern, but its bow is stronger, due to being made of reinforced wood.

Battle Strategy[]

While the StarHammer has inferior sustained firepower compared to the standard Man-o-War, it is armed with a Nova Mortar, giving it superior firepower when it is loaded. The broadside, while weaker than the Man-o-War's, is still very powerful. One could use the StarHammer as a slightly weaker Man-o-War most of the time, but whenever the Nova Mortar is off cooldown, a well aimed shot could turn the tide of the battle. Alternatively, if you really want to commit to the artillery ship, then you could equip the broadside with Star Mortars, and fire them off in sequence at long range. You can combine the Nova Mortar with a Grav Charge to guarantee a hit, but it's recommended to get another ship to fire the Grav Charge, as this ship turns far too slowly to line the shot up in time. As with the Man-o-War, using smaller, faster ships as support can compensate for this ship's lack of manoeuvrability.

Counter-Tactics[]

Like with the Man-o-War, stay behind it at all times. Never allow this ship to bring its Nova Mortar to bear if possible. Staying behind this ship is even easier to do than with the Man-o-War, as it turn even slower. You can also stay very close to its allied ships, so even if it fires the Nova Mortar at you, it will at least damage their ally along with you.

Trivia[]

  • In Open Skirmishes, all StarHammer names are adjectives.
  • The mesh scene in the Demo (which determines weapon, mesh, and effect placement) reveals that the StarHammer has mounting points for an extra LaserBall Cannon on each of its four broadside banks, similar to the standard Man-o-War. However, this is not shown on the mesh themselves, and while the weapon points can be modded in, provided one imports the mesh scene file from the Demo, they will not look correct.
  • In the files, the StarHammer, along with the Imperial Frigate and Imperial Man-o-War, was originally equipped with a Medium Point-Defence Lancer on its bow, instead of the Light Lancer it uses in the final game.
